Lunar Rock, Stanbury Hill, Bingley Moor, Occident Yorkshire

Cup-and-Ring Rock: OS Grid Mention - SE 1099 4336

Besides Cognized as:

  • Carvingno.81 ( Hedges )
  • Carvingno.102 ( Boughey & Vickerman )

Getting Here

General design of Lunar Stone

General designing of Lunar Rock

From E Morton settlement, take the moor route, east, and upwards the steep hill. Where the route levels out there Holds a right crook, plus ( more importantly! ) a trackway on your left which directs onto the Moor. Travel upwardly this traclk and maintain walking till you hit a moor pathway ' guidepost. Halt here and walk w ( your left ) onto the gently inclining rise of Stanbury Hill. Maintain walking for a 250 paces close to, where the land holds inclined gently downwardly to the terminal of the spurring; and but 50 paces before it drops tot he stream below you 'll happen a clustering of rocks dispel about. One of the rocks here is this one!

Archeology & History

This is an first-class carving foremost entered, it looks, by Stuart Plumage in 1977, as refered in the Yorkshire Archeology Diary 's Lists ' for 1978. It can be bumped some 27 paces west of a prehistorical cairn near the top of the ridge ( 14 paces east of the same cairn is the Spotted Rock carving ).

Lunar Stone carving

Lunar Rock carving

Southeast section, with 3 cup-and-rings?

Southeasterly subdivision, with 3 cup-and-rings?

We need to presume that when Mr Plumage foremost located this rock that the weak cup-and-rings on the upmost southeasterly subdivision of the stone holded been exposed to the elements from Day 1, so to verbalise: as the designs here are rather weak and well-worn. Another not unreasonable premiss is that Mister Plumage so continued to delve off at the residual of the stone, exposing other features on the rock which holded positioned under the dirt for unnumbered centuries, as the northmost constituent of the carving holds minimum eroding effects on that. So, unless this is true, we need to commence conceiving that the carving was done over rather drawn-out periods of clip, due only to the greater and lesser effects of weathering on different subdivisions of the rock.

As seen in both the diagram and photos, this is a rather extravagent designing. Lying of several cup-and-rings, aswell as a double-ring, it is chance amidst a little clump of as impressive, albeit really different carved rocks, all seeming to hold a rather specific relationship with decease and ritual. This and the other rocks are encountered on the western terminal of a little snakelike ridge of land ( Stanbury Hill ), with watercourses flux on the North and western sides and little remains of fenland south. The geomantic characteristic here, if relevant, links to movements between the Earth, H2O, decease and the positioning Sun: rather powerful and important issues in the lives of the neolithic and Bronze Age peoples who populated herewith.

Northern section of carving - with calendrical cups?

Northern subdivision of carving - with calendric cups?

The rubric of this rock carving the Lunar Rock should be rather plain: the designing holds all the earmarks of heavenly lunar movements around the ridge of the Shangri-la; or here, fancied along the borders of the stone ( symbolic of the empyrean ), upon and amidst which the Moon travels in its rhythmical gesture through the paradises. But make n't take that overly seriously: it Holds but an inventive flicker that struck my otherwise overwrought inability to cognize what I 'm speaking about!

Mentions

Hedges, Lavatory ( ED ), The Carved Rocks of Rombald 's Moor , WYMCC: Wakefield 1986.

NB - Since penning this and analysing the imagination, it looks there Holds another cup-and-ring on this rock which was lost by Messrs Hedges, Boughey and Vickerman and which we lost in our study from but a couple of years ago. We 're locomoting back up to measure the designing again in a couple of years clip and it appears rattlingly likely that we will should amend the diagram supra.
